Blue Suede Shoes On Elvis Trip Of A Lifetime

THERE are not many jobs that take you from Medowie to Memphis, but for Norm Bakker it means there will be a "whole lotta shakin' goin' on".

Mr Bakker is a Medowie-based Elvis tribute artist and his show is about to take him on an historic journey to the place where it all began for "the King".

But before he jets off to the United States, Mr Bakker will star at a tribute this weekend at Parkes, known as the Elvis capital of Australia.

It will mark the 30th anniversary of Elvis's death.

The highlight of the weekend will be Mr Bakker's tribute show, which has a Vegas-like feel complete with showgirls.

Mr Bakker received an invitation last week from organisers to perform this month in Elvis's hometown of Memphis. He will leave on Thursday.

"When I received the call it was like winning the lottery," Mr Bakker said.

"I have been over there before but never to perform and to be asked to sing at Graceland just blew me away," he said.

"I am so honoured to be representing Australia."

A self-confessed Elvis fan, club director by day and Elvis tribute artist by night, Mr Bakker said Elvis's music was ageless.

He is a veteran of Bandstand and the Johnny O'Keefe Show.
